puppybasic is a program interpreter for basic scripts, included with
puppylinux. it was developed from wx-basicscript by mark ulrich and
jerry muelver, which in turn is based on wxbasic by david cuny.
puppybasic enables the creation of scripts that access the terminal,
files, and gui dialogs in a way that even beginners can toy with.
puppybasic lets almost anyone "write small, simple programs... without
the elegance of huger languages (but [is so much] easier to use)."
being mindful of its limitations, it is worth seeing some the
lightweight utilities created using puppybasic. many of them call more
powerful apps that were written in c, but allow a quick, easy, and even
attractive interface to be built over, or between them.

it can also be a lot of fun, and this tutorial was greated to help the
reader get a foot in the door, and learn to have a bit of fun, tweaking
code and telling the computer exactly what to do.
(a note: this tutorial is currently designed as an intro to programming,
and may not delve into creating gui's. however, a puppybasic tutorial
exists for that very task, elsewhere.)

b.a.s.i.c. itself was designed to make programming more accessible to
newcomers, and is probably the friendliest programming language there
is. created at dartmouth college, it is a major part of a decades-long
tradition of hobby programming, and countless books and websites
include b.a.s.i.c. source code for you to try out on your computer.
while basic has gone through a number of changes over the years, one
thing is common throughout all good implementations: relative
simplicity. this tutorial can offer you your first, second, or tenth
taste of basic programming, and help you use some of what you've
learned, or are learning, in puppylinux.
